Christina Rosetti’s beloved text sets a scene of winter sparseness and chill, depicting the primitive circumstances surrounding the Messiah’s birth. Yet in the last verse, the warmth of a giving heart breaks through the ice and melts the snow. We may not have the treasures of the wise men or the tender lambs of the shepherd, but the gift of our hearts will warm the very heart of God. Though we may not have much to offer the Child King, we can give Him our hearts, dispelling the icy bondage of selfishness and sin.
