God is Sufficient for Us

God laid the song “Our Sufficiency is of God” upon my heart before the birth of my second child, a time in my life when I felt particularly overwhelmed. In my personal bible reading, God used 2 Corinthians 3:5 to work in my life, "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God." God began to teach me that I am not enough to handle life, but He is sufficient to help me!

Every stage of life has challenges, and every person faces personal struggles. There is no time in life when we do not need God, and my heart’s desire for this song was to focus on God and His sufficiency as I walk this exciting yet sometimes difficult and weary journey called life.

One of my driving goals as a Christian composer is to set scripture to music and incorporate as much biblical truth as possible into a piece. Also, I desire to write music that is sensitive to the hardships and struggles of life, yet the focus of music must be God-ward and not inward (self-focused) to truly lift the soul and spirit. Focusing on “me” and “my feelings” will only drive me into despair, but when I lift my eyes to God, He will lift me out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock.

I have two versions of this song, a simple “hymn-style” template and a choir arrangement (SATB with piano). The hymn version would be perfect for the church congregational setting or personal worship, and the choir arrangement was written with a small church choir in mind (though a larger church could certainly sing this arrangement).

Below is simple YouTube video of a digital rendering from my music program (Finale). The musical phrasing in this recording is not as rich as a real choir, and someday I hope to post a real choir singing this piece.
