More than a decade ago, my husband and I, along with the help of some family members, painted our entire downstairs a light tan color by Sherwin Williams. Slowly, over the last several years, I have been trying to erase that rather poor décor decision though I have come to grips with the fact that my living room will probably not change anytime soon.

You see, it’s kind of like those children’s books, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie: if I paint the living room a different color, then I have to paint going up the entire staircase. Yuck. I have many other better activities to be doing with my time than painting that staircase again.

Yet, a few months ago, an idea dawned upon my brain which my husband teasingly told me he was not helping me with: wallpaper the foyer area. I realized that our tiny foyer area was an entire “room” with the possibility of wallpapering the entire area without any weird cutoffs into another room.

I am thrilled with the results of wallpapering my foyer! Wallpapering my foyer brought instant visual “a-peel” (I used peel and stick wallpaper…get my corny joke?…Hehe…and my hubby thinks I never crack jokes…) and detail to an otherwise boring and even dark area of my home. As light bounces off the wallpaper, this tiny area of my home no longer looks dark and dingy. I love wallpapering an area because it’s a décor feat that I can accomplish on my own without pestering hubby or hiring a carpenter to add detail to an area.

Tips for Installing Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Before I begin, I just want to be upfront that this post is not going to be an entire treatise on how to install peel and stick wallpaper. There are lots of blog posts and videos already floating out there; this post is mainly meant to inspire.

All that said, here are a few helpful ideas for installing peel and stick wallpaper.

I used my husband’s laser level to draw an initial straight line on the wall to begin my wallpaper project. Trust me, you want to start level or the whole project will eventually turn wonky.

Each time I installed a new piece of wallpaper, I first held up a piece of wallpaper to make a mark of the approximate width. Then I turned the laser level on and drew a new line with my yardstick. This penciled line helped me stay level as I installed the wallpaper.

I bought an inexpensive wallpaper smoothing kit from amazon, complete with several “smoothers” and a razor blade for trimming the wallpaper once installed. I highly recommend purchasing this kit as it will help get all those pesky air bubbles out.

Why I Love Peel and Stick Wallpaper

I love its price point. At about $27 a roll, I “papered” my foyer for about $100.

I love its ease of installation. Peel and Stick wallpaper is just what it sounds like—a huge, beautiful sticker that I mounted on my walls. There were times I repositioned the paper 8 or more times before getting it just right, all without ruining the wallpaper or damaging my walls. Also, there is no sticky glue or water involved (not that I know anything about installing traditional wallpaper—I don’t. But I can only imagine what a messy process it is.)

I love how easy it is to source. With a click of a button, I can order another roll of wallpaper because I miscalculated my estimates. Amazon has such a wide array of beautiful wallpapers. In both wallpaper projects in my home, I have used the company Nupaper, and I highly recommend them. I used Nupaper's lovely "Enchanted" pattern in Taupe for this project.

I just love how this wallpapering project turned my blah foyer into something truly beautiful. Instead of being a boring passthrough area, the foyer has become a highlight of our entire downstairs.

It’s taken a lot of love and creativity to turn our angled, detail-less 1980’s house into something softer and charming, but it has been possible with collected treasures and some thoughtful new installations.

Happy homemaking, friends!
