A Heart at Rest

October 28, 2024

How can I rest in such a busy world? How can I rest when my to-do list is longer than my to-day? Is rest that elusive “thing” that only the spiritually elite achieve? How can I rest when trials slither into my life like that unwanted copperhead in the backyard?

Jesus calls us to rest. He calls us to rest in Him for salvation. I used to worry every single day about my eternal salvation until I realized it’s not me that saves me; Jesus saves me! When I quit struggling about my salvation and simply rested on Him, the worries faded into the nothingness where they have always belonged.

Mt 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Jesus calls me to rest in Him for the everyday struggles. If He is big enough and strong enough to keep me for all of eternity (and He most certainly is capable of that incredible task), then He is amply qualified to walk along side of me every day, comforting me, aiding me, and strengthening me.

Jesus calls me to rest in Him to fulfill my desires. My heart whispers certain wishes almost daily, and even if those desires are never granted, my Lord is big enough to fill the longings of my heart. In fact, He alone can truly satisfy me! I am actually thankful for the longings of my heart because those aches orient my heart Godward where my gaze truly belongs.

So how does a person rest? A person can rest by coming to Christ and finding Him to be sufficient, everything one could possibly need in this life and forever more. I can rest when I give up my way to God and surrender my heart to Him. I can rest when I stop all the thoughts and actions that are hurting myself and others--worries, angry words, obsessive behaviors, etc.—and take the yoke of Christ. Christ is gentle, and so often He asks the gentle things of me and I am the cruel taskmaster, asking what is hard and unbearable.

Mt 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

As my husband often reminds me, “We live in a hurting world.” The more people I meet, whether in person or online, I am encountering hurting hearts. If your heart is hurting and you cannot find rest, I invite you to sit in a quiet place and pour over Matthew 11:28-30.

When I allow these verses to steep in my soul, the rest of Christ permeates my heart and all is still and quiet in my heart. What troubles me seems insignificant. What my heart cries out for seems distant. Jesus is enough, and He alone can fill a longing soul.

Mt 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

May you find the lovely Lord Jesus to be all you need, dear friends.
